Sweden Army

The Swedish Army, designated Armén, functions as the land branch of the Swedish Armed Forces. Operational command is exercised through the Joint Forces Command in Stockholm, while administrative oversight and operational planning are conducted by the Army Staff in Enköping. Regiments manage force generation and training for wartime units. The main combat formation is the 1st Division, which commands mechanized and subarctic infantry brigades, including the 4th Subarctic Mechanised Brigade, 7th Mechanised Brigade, and 19th Subarctic Mechanised Brigade. Army garrisons are situated across Sweden, including Boden, which houses the Norrbotten Regiment and Boden Artillery Regiment; Skövde, base of the Skaraborg Regiment; Revingehed, home to the South Scanian Regiment; Arvidsjaur, location of the Norrland Dragoon Regiment; and Visby, hosting the Gotland Regiment. Specialized elements include the Air Defence Regiment in Halmstad and the Bergslagen Artillery Regiment in Kristinehamn.

Armored and mechanized formations constitute the maneuver force. Armored units operate Stridsvagn 122 main battle tanks, while mechanized infantry units field tracked combat vehicles of the Stridsfordon 90 family, including the Strf 9040 infantry fighting vehicle. Wheeled armored transport is supplied by Pansarterrängbil 360 and Patria vehicles. Artillery formations field Archer self-propelled 155 mm howitzers, Granatkastarpansarbandvagn 90 mortar vehicles, and towed 120 mm mortars. Air defense relies on the Patriot surface-to-air missile system, designated Luftvärnssystem 103, alongside IRIS-T SLS platforms and RBS 70 short-range missile systems. Tactical anti-armor capabilities center on Carl Gustaf recoilless rifles, NLAW anti-tank guided missiles, and AT4 unguided weapons.

The main mission of the army is territorial defense, with an emphasis on winter and subarctic operations. Ground forces participate in NATO integrated defense missions, maintaining deployed troops in Latvia and executing joint defense plans across the Nordic region. Modernization plans focus on expanding unit readiness and procuring new system capabilities. Active programs include upgrading Stridsvagn 122 tanks to the Stridsvagn 123 standard, acquiring additional air defense batteries, purchasing rocket artillery, and integrating uncrewed ground and aerial platforms. In 2026, acquisitions were authorized for loitering munitions, reconnaissance drones, and unmanned electronic warfare systems to support frontline maneuver formations.
