Turkey Army

The Turkish Land Forces Command, headquartered in Ankara, directs ground operations through four field armies and regional commands. The 1st Army is headquartered in Istanbul and covers the Thrace and Marmara regions. The 2nd Army, headquartered in Malatya, manages southern border defense and cross-border ground operations. The 3rd Army, stationed in Erzincan, covers the eastern Anatolian region, while the Aegean Army, based in Izmir, oversees western coastal defenses. Operational formations include the Turkish Cyprus Peace Force Command in northern Cyprus, alongside corps headquarters managing armored, mechanized infantry, motorized infantry, commando, and artillery brigades.

Armored units operate Altay, Leopard 2A4, M60TM, and M48A5 main battle tanks. Mechanized and motorized infantry formations field ACV-15 infantry fighting vehicles, PARS 8x8 and 6x6 armored vehicles, and mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles including the Kirpi, Vuran, and Cobra series. Artillery forces utilize T-155 Firtina tracked and T-155 Panter 8x8 wheeled self-propelled howitzers, Boran lightweight towed howitzers, TRG-300 Kasirga multiple rocket launchers, and Bora tactical ballistic missile systems. Air defense forces deploy Korkut self-propelled anti-aircraft systems, Hisar-A+ and Hisar-O+ surface-to-air missile batteries, and S-400 long-range systems. Army aviation operates T129 ATAK attack helicopters, CH-47F Chinook heavy transport helicopters, and S-70 Black Hawk utility helicopters, alongside uncrewed aerial systems including the Bayraktar TB2, Anka, and Akinci.

Ground forces conduct cross-border counter-insurgency and expeditionary operations across multiple theaters. Units maintain a deployment in northern Iraq to target Kurdistan Workers Party positions. In northern Syria, ground elements occupy defensive positions and military posts across Aleppo, Raqqa, and Idlib provinces. Additional deployments include the Turkish Task Force Command in Somalia, advisory missions in Libya, and troop contributions to the NATO Kosovo Force and the European Union Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Modernization focuses on expanding domestic procurement and integrating uncrewed platforms with armored formations. In 2026, serial production deliveries brought Altay main battle tanks, T-155 Panter 8x8 mobile howitzers, and Firtina II artillery systems into active service. Domestic acquisitions include Siper long-range air defense systems, Tolga layered short-range air defense architectures, and medium-class uncrewed ground vehicles. The Ministry of Defense also initiated an expansion of elite commando brigades to update force structures for high-intensity land warfare and drone-integrated operations.
