A Russian Su-24 crossed into Swedish airspace east of the southern tip of Gotland on a Friday evening. Two Swedish Air Force pilots called the aircraft on the radio and warned it off, receiving no reply. Two JAS 39 Gripens then intercepted the bomber and escorted it out. Sweden had joined NATO three months earlier, making this one of the first violations of its airspace as an alliance member.
An Italian Eurofighter on NATO Baltic Air Policing duty destroyed an unidentified drone over eastern Latvia before dawn on 14 August, the second time the alliance's quick-reaction force has shot one down over the country this year.
