Europe Logged More Airspace Violations by Mid-August 2026 Than in All of 2025

GlobalMilitary.net's incident log counts 45 established violations of European airspace between January 1 and August 16, 2026, against 31 for the whole of 2025 - and almost all of the growth sits in incidents that ended with a shootdown or an explosion on the ground.

Europe recorded 45 established violations of its airspace between January 1 and August 16, 2026, more than the 31 logged across the whole of 2025, according to the incident log maintained by GlobalMilitary.net for its European airspace tracker. The log now holds 98 incidents since 2022.

The headline count understates the shift. Incursions - objects that crossed a border and left again - were essentially flat, at 24 this year against 26 in 2025. What grew was everything more serious. Interceptions, meaning an intruder shot down or forced down, rose from three to ten. Incidents in which something reached the ground on European soil, damaging property or triggering an evacuation, rose from two to eleven.

The geography moved as well. In 2025 Poland led the log with eight incidents, ahead of Romania and Lithuania on six each, and the pressure sat along the Belarusian and Kaliningrad borders. In 2026 the center of gravity is the Danube Delta. Romania accounts for 17 of the 45, followed by Latvia with seven, then Moldova and Lithuania with five each. Poland has three.

Attribution is not one-sided. Of this year's 45 incidents, 24 were attributed by national authorities to Russia, eight to Ukraine and two to Belarus; eleven carry no attribution at all. The Ukrainian entries include a drone that struck the chimney of the Auvere power plant in Estonia in March, one that hit an oil storage site at Rezekne, Latvia, in May, and the drone a French Rafale shot down over eastern Latvia in June.

Air policing has become routine work. Romanian F-16s destroyed three drones over the Danube Delta and Romanian territorial waters within three days in late July. On August 14 an Italian Typhoon on Baltic Air Policing duty brought down a drone over Balvi in eastern Latvia. Two days later a Spanish EF-18 flying from Mihail Kogalniceanu destroyed an intruder over Galati county, Romania's fourth shootdown of the year. Several of the objects that reached the ground were Geran-2 one-way attack drones; one detonated against an apartment building in Galati in May, injuring two people.

Manned aircraft remain a small share of the log. A Russian military aviation Su-30 crossed into Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland in March, and another Russian aircraft violated Finnish airspace off Porkkala in May. August alone accounts for ten of the 45 entries, the densest month the log has recorded.

The count is deliberately narrower than others in circulation. A report published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in July counted 144 incidents across 13 European countries between August 2024 and February 2026, a figure that includes unexplained drone sightings over airports, ports and military sites. GlobalMilitary.net's log records only violations that were established - the object was tracked on radar, intercepted, filmed, or recovered as debris - and excludes the sightings wave, a large share of which was not substantiated on investigation.

Four and a half months of 2026 remain. At the rate recorded so far, the log would close the year near 70 incidents, more than double the 2025 total.
