What Happened
Five unidentified drones overflew the French naval base at Île Longue in Finistère, Brittany, home port of France's four ballistic missile submarines and the most sensitive military site in the country. Naval personnel were reported to have opened fire. Defence minister Catherine Vautrin confirmed the drones had been "intercepted" by personnel at the base without specifying whether that meant shot down, jammed or otherwise neutralised. No attribution was established.
An Italian Eurofighter on NATO Baltic Air Policing duty destroyed an unidentified drone over eastern Latvia before dawn on 14 August, the second time the alliance's quick-reaction force has shot one down over the country this year.
