Finnish surveillance tracked a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft crossing into national airspace south of Utö on the afternoon of 20 August 2026. The Border Guard, which leads such inquiries, put the incursion at about three minutes and roughly 4.7 nautical miles at its deepest point. The defence minister said every suspected territorial violation is taken seriously and that an investigation was under way, and the foreign ministry summoned Russia's ambassador the following day to demand an explanation. It was Finland's second suspected Russian airspace violation of 2026, after a weather-driven crossing off Porkkala in May.
