Two incidents were recorded at the Giurgiulesti border crossing during the Russian strike on the Ukrainian Danube port of Reni on 20 August 2026. At 03:45 a border patrol saw an explosion in a lorry park about 150 metres inside Ukraine, the blast setting alight vegetation that spread onto Moldovan land until firefighters extinguished it. At 09:25 a mobile patrol found a crater about one kilometre inside Moldova holding drone wreckage, the motor, a power board and propeller parts, identified by explosives experts as coming from a Geran. President Maia Sandu said Moldovan airspace had been violated again and called for stronger pressure on Russia.
