Description
Erdek Naval Base (Erdek Deniz Üssü) is a Turkish Navy installation on the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara, 1.2 km south-east of Erdek, in Balıkesir Province. It is the main base of Turkey's mine warfare vessels.
Three formations are stationed there: the 1st Mine Hunting and Sweeping Flotilla Command (1. Arama Tarama Filotillası Komodorluğu), the 2nd Mine Hunting and Sweeping Flotilla Command (2. Arama Tarama Filotillası Komodorluğu) and the Mine Warfare Support Centre Command (Mayın Harbi Destek Merkezi Komutanlığı).
The 1st Flotilla operates the A (Aydın)-class minehunters — TCG Alanya, Amasra, Ayvalık and Akçakoca — as well as the S-class minesweepers TCG Silifke, Saros, Sığacık, Sapanca and Sarıyer.
The 2nd Flotilla comprises the E (Engin)-class minehunters — TCG Edincik, Edremit, Enez, Erdek and Erdemli, several of them former British units — and the F-class minesweepers TCG Foça, Fethiye, Fatsa and Finike.
