Description
Foça Naval Base (Foça Deniz Üssü) is a Turkish Navy installation on the eastern coast of the Aegean Sea, some 4.2 km south-south-east of Foça in İzmir Province. It is the principal base of the Turkish naval infantry and supports amphibious operations in the Aegean.
The base falls under the Southern Sea Area Command, which maintains several marine and special operations formations there. The largest is the Amphibious Marines Brigade (Amfibi Deniz Piyade Tugayı), a formation of about 4,500 personnel comprising three amphibious battalions, a main battle tank battalion, an artillery battalion, a support battalion and additional company-sized units. Also stationed at Foça are the Underwater Attack Commando Detachment (Su Altı Taarruz, SAT), tasked with military intelligence gathering, amphibious assault, counter-terrorism and VIP protection, and the Underwater Defense Commando Detachment (Su Altı Savunma, SAS).
Homeported vessels are amphibious warfare types: tank landing ships (LST) and landing craft of the LCT and LCM categories, matching the lift requirements of the brigade and its armour.
