Fokino Naval Base (Shkotovo-17)

Fokino is a base of the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet on the coast of Primorsky Krai, Russia. It lies on Abrek Bay, an inlet of the Peter the Great Gulf, some 45 kilometres south of Vladivostok. The presence of the fleet gives the surrounding town closed-administrative status: access is restricted, and foreign nationals require a special permit to enter. The urban okrug administered from Fokino also takes in the urban-type settlements of Dunay and Putyatin and the islands of Putyatin and Askold.

The naval settlement of Tikhookeansky, established alongside the fishing village of Promyslovka, received urban-type settlement status in 1963; the two settlements grew together and were merged, receiving town status on 4 October 1980. From that point the base and its town were closed to outside access and identified officially by the code name Shkotovo-17, the name Fokino being adopted openly in 1994.
