Vladivostok Naval Base

Vladivostok Naval Base is the Russian Navy's principal installation on the Pacific and the headquarters of the Pacific Fleet. It lies on the Golden Horn Bay, an inlet at the southern end of the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula on the Sea of Japan, in Primorsky Krai, Russia. The base sits roughly 45 km from the Chinese border and 134 km from the North Korean border.

The naval base is one of the three mainstays of the city's economy alongside commercial shipping and fishing, and the harbour it shares with the commercial port is Russia's largest on the Pacific. Shipbuilding and ship repair are among the industries operating in the city. Naval training establishments in Vladivostok include the Pacific Higher Naval School and, since 2016, a branch of the Nakhimov Naval School.

A military post was established at Golden Horn Bay on 2 July 1860 by a detachment landed from the Siberian Military Flotilla transport Manzhur under Lieutenant-Commander Alexei Shefner. In 1871 the main base of the Siberian Military Flotilla, together with the military governor's headquarters and other naval departments, was transferred from Nikolaevsk-on-Amur to Vladivostok, and the main Russian naval base in the Pacific followed in 1872. Under the Council of Ministers decree "Issues of the Fifth Navy" of 11 August 1951, the city was closed to foreigners from 1 January 1952; that status ended on 1 January 1992.
