Polyarny Naval Base (Alexandrovsk)

Polyarny is a Russian Navy base on the western shore of the Kola Bay, the estuary of the Kola and Tuloma rivers on the Barents Sea coast of Murmansk Oblast, Russia. It supports Northern Fleet forces operating from the Kola inlet and lies within the closed administrative-territorial formation of Alexandrovsk, of which the town of Polyarny is the administrative center.

The principal installation is Shipyard No. 10 (Shkval), which in Western sources is generally identified by the name of the town rather than by its official designation. The yard docks and repairs nuclear-powered submarines, a capability added when the first such boats entered Northern Fleet service. Polyarny also functions as a lay-up point for decommissioned Russian naval nuclear vessels, which are held there pending defuelling and disposal.

Polyarny acquired naval functions in the 1930s. The yard was reconfigured for the docking and repair of nuclear-powered submarines at the end of the 1950s, when the first of these units were delivered to the Northern Fleet. The town was granted the title City of Military Glory by presidential decree of 5 May 2008.
