Description
Jianggezhuang Naval Base, also designated Submarine Base No. 1, is a People's Liberation Army Navy submarine base on the Yellow Sea coast, roughly 24 km east of Qingdao. It occupies a bay about 1.9 km across, with the main facilities in the eastern portion of the bay.
The base supports the PLAN's nuclear submarine force, homeporting the Type 092 ballistic missile submarine and Type 091 nuclear attack submarines.
The harbour is enclosed by breakwaters with a single entrance. Alongside the piers and dry dock, the site includes service facilities and an underground submarine tunnel cut into the adjacent high ground.
