Description
Yuchi Naval Base, formally Navy Comprehensive Support Base Qingdao (海军青岛综合保障基地), is a base of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) at Yuchi Bay, in the West Coast New Area south of the main urban area of Qingdao, Shandong Province, on the Yellow Sea. It is subordinate to the PLAN's North Sea Fleet.
The base is the homeport of the aircraft carrier Liaoning and of the escort and support vessels of its carrier battle group, one of two operational PLAN carrier groups. The harbour is divided into two main areas, with the carrier battle group occupying the eastern part.
Approaches are sheltered by several breakwaters, and the base has deep-draught access. Mooring piers exceed 1,000 metres in length, with a further pier of approximately 820 metres. It is among the largest installations operated by the PLAN.
The base was founded on 9 September 1950. Satellite imagery indicates expansion of the site from early 2012, associated with its adaptation as a carrier homeport.
