Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam

Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam is a United States Department of Defense installation on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, operated by the United States Navy under Navy Region Hawaii. It lies on Pearl Harbor, some 13 km west of Honolulu. The joint base combines the Navy's Naval Station Pearl Harbor with the Air Force's Hickam Air Force Base and provides base operating support to Navy and joint tenant commands.

Naval Station Pearl Harbor furnishes berthing and shore support to surface ships and submarines, together with maintenance and training. It can accommodate the largest ships in the fleet, including dry dock services, and hosts over 160 commands. It is the only intermediate maintenance facility for submarines in the mid-Pacific and therefore supports large numbers of transiting submarine crews in addition to homeported units. Shore side activities include housing, personnel services and family support for permanent and transient personnel.

The air component, Hickam, named after Lt. Col. Horace Meek Hickam, falls under Pacific Air Forces, whose headquarters is on the base. Hickam is used as a launch point for strategic air mobility and operational missions and for special air missions supporting the commanders of U.S. Pacific Command and Pacific Air Forces. The airfield is shared with Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and has four asphalt runways, the longest measuring about 3,750 m, plus water runways. The 647th Air Base Group is garrisoned alongside Navy Region Hawaii as host organisation.

Associated shore infrastructure includes Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Pacific at Wahiawa, in the central part of Oahu about three miles north of the town, described as the world's largest communication station. Wells supplying groundwater feed the base water system, which serves military housing, the Aliamanu Military Reservation and several elementary schools and day care centres. The installation is commanded by a Navy captain.

Naval facilities at Pearl Harbor date from 1899, with the airfield at Hickam Field established in 1938. The joint base in its present form was created in 2010, when Naval Station Pearl Harbor and Hickam Air Force Base were merged as one of twelve joint bases established by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission.
