Description

Karachi Naval Dockyard, officially designated PN Dockyard, is a principal base of the Pakistan Navy on the Karachi coast in Sindh, Pakistan. It is owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Pakistan Navy under Logistics Command, with the Repairs and Maintenance Group as its resident garrison. The dockyard lies adjacent to the commercial premises of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works and to PNS Qasim, the marine base. It is closed to the public and commanded by an officer of rear-admiral rank.

The dockyard carries out ship repair, refit and maintenance for the fleet, and functions as the Navy's shipbuilding and weapons production complex. Design and construction work has covered fast missile boats and patrol craft for the maritime police. Since the 1990s the establishment has served as the Navy's marine propulsion production base, working on propulsion systems for the Agosta 90B submarines and for Italian- and Chinese-designed warships. Production work, previously conducted solely for the Navy, was placed under the Ministry of Defence in 1994. The base was Pakistan's first submarine base and remains associated with the submarine force, although submarine training has since been transferred elsewhere.

The Pakistan Navy inherited the facility from the Royal Navy dockyard at Karachi in 1947, on the division of the Royal Indian Navy; it was the only naval base the country received in the partition and at the time amounted to a small repair yard employing about 500 workers. In 1952 its scope was widened to full repair and reproduction of British-supplied equipment, with recruitment of civilian engineers to support maintenance programmes. It was selected as the country's first submarine base in 1963 when PNS Ghazi arrived, and a Submarine Training Centre followed in 1964, moving to PNS Bahadur in 1980 and to a dedicated facility, PNS Abdoze, in 1990.
