Description

Naval Support Activity Naples is a United States Navy shore installation in Campania, Italy, providing base support to US naval commands in the Mediterranean. Its main site lies at Capodichino, adjacent to Naples International Airport. The property is Italian, held by the Italian Ministry of Defence and subject to Italian military control, while the US Navy operates the facility under Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Central.

The Activity hosts the headquarters of US Naval Forces Europe and Africa, which relocated from London to Naples in 2005, and the headquarters of the US Sixth Fleet. As a support activity rather than a fleet base, it furnishes administrative, logistic, communications and personnel support to these commands and to US naval units operating in the Mediterranean and off Africa.

Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples has been located at the Activity since the 1990s, handling communications and information systems support for the region. Naval Hospital Naples, established at Agnano in 1967, moved to the support site at Gricignano di Aversa in April 2003. Naval Support Activity Gaeta, which supports the Sixth Fleet flagship at Gaeta, became a detachment of NSA Naples on 10 February 2006. Carney Park, in the crater of the Campiglione volcano, is operated as a recreational annex.

The shore unit Headquarters, Support Activities was established on 3 October 1951 to support Allied Forces Southern Europe and subsequently the Sixth Fleet. It was redesignated Commander, Subordinate Command, US Naval Forces Eastern Atlantic / Commander, Headquarters Support Activities in August 1953, and again as US Naval Activities, Italy / US Naval Support Activity, Naples in November 1957. US Naval Activities, Italy was consolidated with US Naval Support Activity, Naples on 8 August 1966.
