Naval Support Activity Bahrain (HMS Juffair)

Naval Support Activity Bahrain is a United States Navy main operating base in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in the Juffair district of Manama on the country's northeastern coast, adjacent to the port at Mina Salman. It provides logistics, supply, force protection and support services to United States Armed Forces and coalition units operating in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters.

The base houses the headquarters of United States Naval Forces Central Command and the United States Fifth Fleet. Patrol Forces Southwest Asia, the Navy's forward-deployed patrol craft and coastal command in the region, is also garrisoned there. The installation falls under Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia, whose commander is responsible for NSA Bahrain and Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti; the region reports to Navy Installations Command and coordinates closely with Naval Forces Central Command. It was the principal regional base supporting naval and Marine operations for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, including its continuation as Operation New Dawn through the end of the Iraq War. The base is commanded by a Navy captain. In 2021 it received the Department of Defense Installation Excellence Award.

Port facilities include a harbour patrol facility and a small-craft basin, both added during the expansion begun in 2010, and a flyover bridge connects the base to the port facility at Mina Salman, where deep-water berthing for larger units is available. Shore infrastructure comprises barracks, a dining facility, administrative buildings, utility plant, a perimeter wall and controlled security gate, a Navy Exchange and Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities, including the Freedom Souq food court opened in 2006. The base occupies a site enlarged from its original 10 acres to some 62 acres before the most recent construction programme.

A permanent Royal Navy shore establishment, HMS Juffair, opened on the site on 13 April 1935 as part of the port at Mina Salman, and a small United States Navy detachment was admitted during the Second World War; from 1948 the American element was designated the U.S. Middle East Force, a shore facility providing logistics and communications support. When the Royal Navy presence ended with Bahraini independence in 1971, the U.S. Navy assumed the entire site by agreement with the Emir, redesignating it Administrative Support Unit Bahrain in 1979 and ASU Southwest Asia in 1992. Facilities at Juffair were rebuilt under the Military Construction Program in 1997, producing Naval Support Activity Bahrain, with further construction from 2003 and a five-year, $580-million expansion begun in 2010.
