Description

Ships and aircraft taking part in the Rim of the Pacific 2026 exercise sank the decommissioned amphibious assault ship ex-USS Peleliu on 17 July 2026, in roughly 15,000 feet of water more than 50 nautical miles north of Kauai, Hawaii. Harpoon, Spike and LRASM missiles struck the hull first, after which Unmanned Surface Vessel Division 32 carried out the Navy's first live-fire employment of a Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft against a large warship, detonating the uncrewed boat at the waterline. Peleliu was the fifth and last Tarawa-class LHA, commissioned in 1980 and decommissioned in March 2015.
