US Army Activates Air Defense Battalion on Guam as Its Part of the Guam Defense System
The 3rd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment was activated at Andersen Air Force Base on October 16, 2026, building on more than a decade of Task Force Talon operations on Guam and, per an Army spokesperson quoted by The War Zone, set to field Patriot and Enduring Shield.
The US Army activated the 3rd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment (3-43 ADA) on Guam in a ceremony held on October 16 at Andersen Air Force Base, according to a 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command story published on October 20. The battalion, part of the 38th ADA Brigade under the 94th AAMDC, stands up under its historic designation and builds on more than a decade of air defense operations on the island by Task Force Talon.
Its mission, according to the Army, is to support the defense of Guam by maintaining readiness and providing air and missile defense capabilities, and the command says the ceremony signals a transition toward "a multi-capability air defense framework." The 38th ADA Brigade commander told the assembled soldiers that "your work here will never be ordinary. Your vigilance will have strategic consequences."
The battalion commander said the unit's soldiers had "developed new procedures, relationships, and integration required to connect sensors, command and control systems, launchers, and interceptors," adding that "3-43 ADA now stands up the Army's contribution to the strategic Guam Defense System." The Army story does not name the weapon systems the battalion will operate.
Those were outlined two months earlier. An Army spokesperson told The War Zone in August that the battalion will integrate the Patriot system and the Indirect Fire Protection Capability (IFPC), known as Enduring Shield, to provide layered 360-degree air and missile defense for Guam. Enduring Shield currently uses the AIM-9X as its interceptor, The War Zone reported, with each launcher carrying up to 18 of the missiles. The outlet also reported that about 120 soldiers are assigned to the battalion on Guam, in addition to the personnel of the island's THAAD battery.
Task Force Talon has operated a THAAD battery on Guam since 2013, according to The War Zone, and has been the Army's air defense presence on the island for more than a decade. The new battalion is the Army's part of the wider Guam Defense System, an effort The War Zone says has been under way since 2021. Other elements the outlet lists include Aegis ballistic missile defense ships, a prototype ground launcher based on the Mk 41 that is already emplaced on the island, and a prototype AN/TPY-6 radar. Earlier plans for Guam involved Aegis Ashore-style Mk 41 launchers for the SM-3 and SM-6 interceptors, The War Zone noted.
Weapon deliveries to the battalion are expected over the months following the October stand-up, according to The War Zone. Two questions remain open: the outlet said it was unclear whether the battalion's Patriot systems will be new production or drawn from existing inventory, and how many Enduring Shield launchers the unit will receive.
