United States Navy P-8A Poseidon Crash

A United States Navy P-8A Poseidon of Patrol Squadron 4, on detachment from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, overran the runway at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay and came to rest in shallow water on coral about fifty feet offshore. All nine people aboard evacuated safely. The navy defuelled and recovered the aircraft over the following two weeks to protect the reef, and initially hoped to return it to flight, but the airframe was ultimately struck from the inventory and dismantled for demilitarisation. It was the first total loss in the P-8A programme, from a fleet built to replace the P-3C Orion.
