Description
Beirut Air Base is a Lebanese Armed Forces military installation located in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon, nine kilometers from the city center. The facility occupies a section on the west end of the Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport in Khalde. The Lebanese Air Force established the base in 1950 to position operations closer to the capital, supplementing the existing primary installation at Rayak.
The Lebanese Air Force operates the facility, utilizing it as the station for the majority of its helicopter force. Historically, the base accommodated fixed-wing aircraft, including Hawker Hunters and Fouga Magisters. The current operational inventory includes both rotary and fixed-wing assets. The helicopter fleet comprises Huey IIs, an AW139 presidential helicopter, and Twin Hueys equipped for utility, firefighting, maritime patrol for oil extraction protection, and light attack profiles. Additionally, the base operates Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft configured for close air support missions.
