Description
Hamat Air Base, formerly known as Pierre Gemayel International Airport, is a Lebanese Air Force installation located in Hamat, Lebanon. The facility traces its origins to 1975, when a dirt runway was established in Jounieh to accommodate military traffic diverted from Beirut. This initial strip was replaced by the construction of Pierre Gemayel International Airport, which began in 1976. The new facility was intended to support both joint-military and civilian operations, though it was never utilized for civilian purposes.
Prior to the airport's completion, the Syrian Army assumed control of the site and utilized it for helicopter operations. The Lebanese Army regained control of the installation in 2005 and transitioned it entirely to military use.
The base is currently operated by the Lebanese Air Force. Its infrastructure includes a runway that underwent patching following airstrike damage. Hamat Air Base operates Embraer A-29B Super Tucano light attack and counter-insurgency aircraft, as well as McDonnell Douglas MD-530F Defender light attack helicopters. In addition to aviation units, the airfield houses facilities for the Lebanese Special Forces school.
