Description
Capital Airport Air National Guard Station is a 91-acre facility located on land leased from the Springfield Airport Authority at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport. The installation serves as the base for the 183d Fighter Wing of the Illinois Air National Guard, which is operationally gained by the Air Combat Command. It also houses the State Headquarters of the Illinois Air National Guard.
Historically, the station supported the 170th Fighter Squadron. Following the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure decision, the 183d Fighter Wing divested its F-16C/D Fighting Falcon aircraft. The final aircraft departed the station in October 2008 for redistribution to other Air National Guard wings.
The station supports the 183d Fighter Wing and its Expeditionary Combat Support elements. Other resident units include the 217th Engineering Installation Squadron. Current operations include the maintenance of an F110 engine Centralized Intermediate Repair Facility (CIRF). The base is staffed by a complement of full-time and part-time military personnel.
