Description
Coast Guard Air Station Chennai is located in Tirusulam, India, operating as a tenant at Chennai International Airport. The civil airport, which opened in 1930, is operated by the AAI. The military detachment is operated by the Indian Coast Guard, the maritime law enforcement and search and rescue agency of the Indian Ministry of Defence, formally established on 18 August 1978. The installation is the eastern seaboard headquarters for Coast Guard Region (East).
Operating as a joint military and civil facility, the air station hosts three Coast Guard Air Squadrons (CGAS). Units stationed at the base include CGAS 744, which operates Dornier 228 aircraft; CGAS 840, equipped with Dhruv Mk III helicopters; and CGAS 848, flying Chetak helicopters.
