Chaoyangchuan Air Base (朝阳川 Yanji Chaoyangchuan)

Chaoyangchuan Air Base is located near Yanji, seat of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin province, northeastern China, close to the Chinese borders with North Korea and Russia. The airfield was built in 1952 during the Korean War as a small military airport and was subsequently operated by the People's Liberation Army Air Force.

Following the economic opening of Yanbian Prefecture in the 1980s, the local government sought civil access to the Air Force airfield. The State Council and the Central Military Commission approved conversion to joint military-civil use on 12 April 1985. On 2 June 1985, a PLA unit and the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture Government signed an agreement under which the Air Force granted civil aviation free use of the runway and allocated land for a terminal, while the Civil Aviation Administration of China supplied navigation equipment and technical personnel. The Civil Aviation Yanji Station was established on 1 July 1985, and the first civil service, an An-24 on the Yanji–Shenyang route, operated on 29 August 1985. A terminal building was constructed between 1987 and September 1988.

Expansion began in the early 1990s in connection with the development of the lower Tumen River region. The first phase, covering airfield pavement works and runway extension, started in May 1993 and entered service in November 1993. The second phase, a new terminal, began in October 1993 and opened in June 1997, with six aircraft parking positions and three jet bridges. The first international charter flight, to Seoul, departed in August 2000. The State Council approved the airport as an international port of entry in June 2003; provincial acceptance followed in June 2004 and final acceptance in 2005, making it the second international airport in Jilin province after Changchun.

In 2011 passenger throughput exceeded one million. A further expansion approved in 2012 extended the terminal westward to create an international flight area and renovated the existing domestic terminal; the aviation fuel station was relocated. The expansion was completed in July 2013 and the international terminal area entered use on 13 October 2013. Visa-on-arrival service began on 11 April 2015. The facility was formally renamed Yanji Chaoyangchuan International Airport in 2017.

The airfield remains in joint military-civil use, with the Air Force retaining control of the runway. Civil services include domestic Chinese routes and international services to South Korea, Vladivostok in Russia, Pyongyang in North Korea, Osaka in Japan, and Taipei.
