Description
Gardermoen Air Station is located 50 km north of Oslo, Norway, colocated with Oslo Airport. The site was established as a Norwegian Army camp named Fredericksfeldt in 1740. Flight operations began in 1912, and infrastructure included several hangars by 1920. During the German invasion in World War II, the airfield was bombed and subsequently rebuilt by occupying forces. The current military station was founded on December 1, 1996. While a relocation of operations to Rygge Air Station was proposed in 2003–2004, the Norwegian Parliament's Defence Committee rejected the move.
The facility is operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force as Station Group Gardermoen. It houses the 335 Squadron, which operates C-130J-30 Super Hercules transport aircraft, and the 717 Squadron, which operates Dassault Falcon 20 electronic warfare aircraft. Infrastructure includes installations designed for rapid expansion. The air station shares the site with Oslo’s primary international airport, which transitioned operations to Gardermoen in 1998.
