Description

Rygge Air Station is located in the municipalities of Moss and Råde in Østfold county, Norway. The facility is operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force. Historically, 720 Squadron transitioned from Gardermoen Air Station to Rygge, replacing UH-1B helicopters with Bell 412s in 1989. In 2002, 332 Squadron and its F-16 Fighting Falcons were moved from Rygge to Bodø Main Air Station and Ørland Main Air Station. The station expanded to incorporate the civilian Moss Airport on 1 October 2007, though the civilian airport closed on 1 November 2016. In 2016, the installation was designated as Air Force Base Rygge.

The base houses the Royal Norwegian Air Force headquarters and staff, the Air Force Operations Inspectorate, and the Air Force Training Inspectorate. Resident flying units include 339 Special Operations Aviation Squadron, which operates Bell 412SP helicopters to support the Norwegian Special Operations Command and the Norwegian Police Service. 717 Squadron operates Dassault Falcon 20 aircraft for electronic warfare and electronic warfare training. A detachment of 330 Squadron operates AgustaWestland AW101 SAR Queen helicopters for search and rescue operations.

Additional organizations located at the base include the Home Guard, the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organization, the Norwegian Defense Estates Agency, and the Norwegian Cyber Defence Force.
