Description
Shayrat Airbase is a Syrian Air Force installation located in Homs Governorate, Syria. Constructed in the 1960s, the base hosts the Syrian Air Force 50th Air Brigade. The brigade consists of three fighter squadrons: the 675th Fighter Squadron operating MiG-23 aircraft, and the 677th and 685th Fighter Squadrons operating Su-22 aircraft. Facilities include two runways and approximately 40 hardened aircraft shelters. United States assessments indicate the installation contains a chemical weapons storage depot.
The Russian Air Force and Iranian Air Force also use the facility. In 2015, Russian forces expanded the runways to accommodate fixed-wing aircraft. The Russian military has used the facility for military supply transit, forward refueling, and rearming operations. Russian deployments to the site have included Mi-8, Mi-17, Mi-24, and Mi-35 attack helicopters, as well as 152 mm 2A65 Msta-B towed howitzers from the 120th Artillery Brigade positioned south of the perimeter.
On 7 April 2017, US Navy destroyers USS Ross and USS Porter launched Tomahawk cruise missiles targeting the airfield following a chemical attack in Khan Shaykhun. Israeli aircraft conducted strikes against the airbase in November 2022 and December 2024.
