Description

Levashovo is an air base situated southwest of Levashovo, within the northern limits of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Constructed in 1960, it is owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces, under the control of the 6th Air and Air Defence Forces Army. The primary unit stationed at the base is the 33rd Independent Composite Aviation Regiment. Additionally, the 549th Air Base, which has a history of redesignations dating back to its activation in 1942 as the 6th independent Transport Aviation Unit, is located here. The 549th Air Base has been based at Levashovo since 1960. Aircraft housed at the base include the Antonov An-12, Antonov An-26, Tupolev Tu-134, Mi-6, and Mi-8 helicopters. Historically, the base has also operated Mi-1, Mi-2, Mi-4, Li-2, Il-14, An-2, An-14, An-24/26, Tupolev Tu-124, and Ilyushin Il-22 aircraft. In 2000, the unit reported 37 Mi-8 and some An-12 aircraft, and in 2009, it had two Tu-134s, six An-26s, five An-12s, and five Mi-8s. The unit has been affiliated with various commands, including the 13th Air Army, 76th Air Army, VVS Leningrad Military District, and currently the 6th Air and Air Defence Forces Army VVS and PVO.
