Description
Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station is located in Niagara Falls, New York, 4.7 miles east-northeast of the city and adjacent to the Niagara Falls International Airport. The facility originated as a municipal airport in 1928. In 1941, the Bell Aircraft Corporation established an adjacent manufacturing plant, and the Materiel Command built the Bell Modification Center at the airfield in 1942 to adapt mass-production aircraft for specific theaters of operations. Naval Air Station Niagara Falls was established in 1946, and the site later transitioned to Air Force Reserve and New York Air National Guard use under a joint-use agreement. The installation was designated Niagara Falls Air Force Base in 1955. In 1971, the 914th assumed command of the installation from active-duty units.
The station is operated by the Air Force Reserve Command and is operationally gained by Air Mobility Command. The 914th Air Refueling Wing serves as the host unit, with the 107th Attack Wing of the New York Air National Guard as a primary tenant. The 914th Air Refueling Wing performs air refueling missions, while the 107th Attack Wing operates remotely piloted aircraft. More than 3,000 military personnel are assigned to these wings. The base also hosts a Military Entrance Processing Station for all five branches of the United States military. Assigned Army Reserve units include the 277th Quartermaster Company, the 1982nd Forward Surgical Team, and Alpha Company, 865th Combat Support Hospital.
The 914th Air Refueling Wing operates KC-135 Stratotankers, and the 107th Attack Wing operates MQ-9 Reapers. Fixed-wing and rotary-wing operations receive support from the 277th Quartermaster Company. Facilities include the Armed Forces Reserve Center, completed in 2013 to house the assigned Army Reserve components. The station is the last federal United States Air Force installation in New York, as remaining installations in the state fall under the jurisdiction of the Air National Guard.
