Description
Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield is a U.S. Army facility located at Fort Drum in Jefferson County, New York. Originally established to support the Pine Plains military training ground, the airfield underwent expansion during World War II to house the 91st Observation Squadron.
In 1985, the airfield became the site for the reactivation of the 10th Mountain Division. A subsequent expansion completed in 1998 allowed the installation to accommodate all aircraft types in the United States Air Force inventory. The airfield functions as the primary departure point for the 10th Mountain Division, utilizing infrastructure that includes a pre-deployment processing facility capable of staging 1,200 soldiers. Operational facilities include an ammunition holding area, refueling points, scales, and vehicle staging and inspection areas.
The airfield hosts the 10th Mountain Division Combat Aviation Brigade. Stationed units include the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battalions of the 10th Aviation Regiment, the 6th Squadron of the 6th Cavalry Regiment, and the 277th Aviation Support Battalion. The installation also supports RQ-7B Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (TUAS) platoons and maintains a specialized runway dedicated to unmanned aircraft operations.
