RAF Gambut

RAF Gambut, also known as RAF Kambut, is an abandoned military complex in Libya, located five kilometers north-northeast of the village of Kambut and 50 kilometers east-south-east of Tobruk. The installation comprised six airfields: Gambut 1 (the main airfield, designated LG139), Gambut 2 (LG142), Gambut 3 (LG143), Gambut West or Gambut 4 (LG156), Gambut 5 (LG159), and Gambut 6 (LG158).

Originally a Regia Aeronautica airfield, the facility was utilized by Allied and Axis forces during World War II. Axis forces captured the site on 17 June 1941 following the Battle of Tobruk, and it was subsequently used by the Luftwaffe. The New Zealand 4th Infantry Brigade recaptured the airfield on 25 November 1941.

During Allied control, the complex hosted numerous squadrons and wings from the Royal Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, and South African Air Force. Between late 1942 and early 1943, the United States Army Air Forces operated from the site, stationing the 12th, 93rd, and 376th Bombardment Groups, as well as the 57th Fighter Group. Aircraft types operated from Gambut included North American B-25 Mitchells, Consolidated B-24 Liberators, and Curtiss P-40 Warhawks.

The airfields are now abandoned. The infrastructure has deteriorated under the desert sand and is no longer visible on aerial photographs.
