Description

Sitalchay Military Airbase is located in eastern Azerbaijan near the Caspian Sea, 70 km northwest of Baku in the Khizi Rayon. Owned by the Azerbaijan Air Force, the facility is fenced and guarded but has been non-operational since 1992.

The airbase hosted the first Soviet Air Forces Sukhoi Su-25 unit. In April 1981, initial production Su-25 aircraft were assigned to the 80th or 60th Separate Assault Aviation Regiment at Sitalchay. The 200th Separate Assault Aviation Squadron formed at the base in June 1981 prior to deploying to Afghanistan. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the airfield stationed a Su-25 regiment assigned to the 34th Air Army of the Soviet Air Forces. In August 1992, Azeri forces seized the regiment and its aircraft.
