Description

SLAF Vavuniya, also designated as Vavuniya Airport, is a Sri Lanka Air Force base and domestic airport located 1.4 kilometers south of Vavuniya in northern Sri Lanka.

The airfield was constructed in 1942 by the British Royal Air Force during World War II. Between 1942 and 1946, the facility hosted Fleet Air Arm units and Royal Air Force squadrons, including No. 17, No. 22, No. 47, No. 60, No. 89, No. 132, No. 176, and No. 217 Squadrons.

On 1 August 1978, a Sri Lanka Air Force detachment re-established military operations at the site. The base is integrated into a military complex that includes the Security Forces Headquarters - Wanni.

SLAF Vavuniya is operated by the Sri Lanka Air Force and hosts No. 111 Air Surveillance Squadron alongside No. 02 Air Defence Radar Squadron. Commercial charter services at the airfield are operated by FitsAir, Helitours, and Cinnamon Air.
