Description
Campbell Army Airfield is a United States Army installation located at Fort Campbell in Christian County, Kentucky, near Hopkinsville. The facility previously operated as Campbell Air Force Base, a United States Air Force installation, from 1947 to 1959.
The airfield currently supports aviation units of the 101st Airborne Division and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne). Units from the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade stationed at the airfield include the Brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Company; the 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment; the 1st, 5th, and 6th Battalions of the 101st Aviation Regiment; and the 96th Aviation Support Battalion. The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) bases its Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Company at the facility, along with the 1st and 2nd Battalions and the USASOAC Special Operations Training Battalion. The airfield was also the station for the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade prior to its deactivation in 2015.
The installation hosts several types of rotary-wing aircraft. The 101st Combat Aviation Brigade operates UH-60M, CH-47F, and AH-64D helicopters. The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) operates MH-60M, MH-60M DAP, MH-47G, and MH-6/AH-6M helicopters through its resident battalions and training battalion. The airfield infrastructure includes two asphalt runways.
