Description

Hunter Army Airfield is located in Savannah, Georgia, and serves as a subordinate installation to Fort Stewart. The facility originated in 1929 as Savannah Municipal Airport and was renamed Hunter Municipal Airfield in 1940 in honor of Frank O'Driscoll Hunter. It was dedicated as Savannah Army Air Base in 1941. During World War II, the site hosted bombardment groups operating B-18, A-24, A-20, and B-26 aircraft, as well as antisubmarine squadrons. Following a period of municipal control after the war, the base reopened in 1950 as Hunter Air Force Base under Strategic Air Command. It hosted the 2nd and 308th Bombardment Wings, operating B-50 and B-47 bombers. In 1963, the base was reassigned to the Military Air Transport Service for C-124 cargo operations. The United States Army assumed control in 1967, establishing the United States Army Flight Training Center to support helicopter pilot requirements.

The United States Army operates the airfield as a deployment hub for the 3rd Infantry Division. Stationed units include the aviation units of the 3rd Infantry Division, the 1st Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment, and the 3rd Battalion of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne). The 3rd Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade consists of multiple units, including the 2nd and 4th Battalions of the 3rd Aviation Regiment and the 3rd Squadron of the 17th Cavalry Regiment, which operate UH-60, CH-47, and AH-64 helicopters. Other resident units include the 224th Military Intelligence Battalion, the 117th Air Control Squadron, and Coast Guard Air Station Savannah. The Coast Guard unit operates MH-65 Dolphin helicopters for search, rescue, and coastal security.

Infrastructure includes an aircraft parking area of more than 350 acres and a 72,000-square-foot Arrival/Departure Airfield Control Group (A/DACG) Facility. These assets, combined with railhead access, support the global deployment of personnel and cargo. The airfield was also designated as an alternate landing site for NASA Space Shuttle orbiters.
