Description

The Convair F-106 Delta Dart is an all-weather interceptor produced by Convair, a division of General Dynamics. Developed as part of the 1954 interceptor program, the aircraft was a development of the F-102 Delta Dagger and was designated the F-102B prior to its redesignation as the F-106. The first prototype conducted its maiden flight on 26 December 1956. Although the United States Air Force (USAF) originally planned to procure 1,000 aircraft, the order was reduced to 350 after flight testing demonstrated lower performance gains than anticipated.

Design

The F-106 is powered by a Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet engine and features redesigned air inlets with variable-geometry ducts to support supersonic speeds. Following retirement, 194 aircraft were converted into QF-106 target drones under the Pacer Six program. NASA operated six aircraft for experimental purposes, including lightning strike research and aerotow-launch vehicle feasibility studies, until 1998.
