Austria Army

The Land Forces of the Austrian Armed Forces form the primary ground component of the national defense force, operating under the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces Command. Operational forces are organized into four combat brigades alongside nine provincial military commands overseeing regional reserve units. The 3rd Infantry Brigade functions as a rapid reaction formation focused on urban combat and domestic security support. The 4th Mechanized Infantry Brigade contains the ground force's armored and mechanized capabilities. The 6th Mountain Brigade specializes in high-altitude alpine warfare, while the 7th Infantry Brigade focuses on air-mobile operations. Provincial commands oversee reserve infantry units tasked with infrastructure protection, assistance operations, and regional security. Military facilities and garrisons are distributed across the federal provinces, including bases in Enns, Klagenfurt, Graz, and Innsbruck.

Ground forces combat elements integrate armored, mechanized, motorized infantry, artillery, and air defense units. Armored formations operate Leopard 2 main battle tanks, while mechanized units field tracked Ulan infantry fighting vehicles. Motorized and light infantry formations employ Pandur and Pandur Evolution wheeled armored personnel carriers, BvS10 all-terrain tracked vehicles, Dingo 2 protected patrol vehicles, and Iveco light tactical vehicles. Indirect fire support is provided by M109 self-propelled howitzers. Ground-based air defense relies on short-range systems, including Mistral surface-to-air missiles and towed Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns.

Modernization programs focus on upgrading heavy armor, expanding armored vehicle fleets, and rebuilding air defense capabilities. Upgrades to Leopard 2 main battle tanks and Ulan infantry fighting vehicles address survivability, fire control, and optics. The army is expanding its fleet of Pandur Evolution vehicles across multiple mission configurations, including command, ambulance, mortar, electronic warfare, and mobile air defense roles. Mobile air defense capabilities are being enhanced through the integration of Skyranger 30 turrets equipped with 30mm revolver cannons and Mistral missiles onto Pandur platforms, alongside modernizations of stationary Skyguard anti-aircraft gun systems.

Under Austria's constitutional status of permanent neutrality, ground forces conduct national defense, disaster relief assistance, and law enforcement support. Foreign operational experience is derived from participation in international peace-support missions under United Nations, European Union, and NATO Partnership for Peace mandates. Deployments include troop contributions to EUFOR Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina, KFOR in Kosovo, and UNIFIL in Lebanon, along with observer contingents in additional international missions.
