Tanzania Army

The Land Forces Command of the Tanzania People's Defence Force constitutes the land warfare branch of the military. Tactical formations are organized into five infantry brigades, an armored brigade, an artillery brigade, air defense artillery units, an engineering regiment, and a central logistics group. Brigade formations include the 201st Brigade in Mwanza, the 202nd Brigade in Tabora, the 203rd Brigade in Zanzibar, the 204th Brigade in Arusha, and the 205th Brigade in Songea, along with the 121st Engineer Regiment. Permanent garrisons are maintained in Dodoma, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Tabora, Arusha, Songea, and Pemba, with national defense headquarters situated in Dodoma following an administrative relocation of military command from Dar es Salaam in 2026.

Armored formations operate VT-2 and upgraded Type 59 main battle tanks, alongside FV101 Scorpion light tanks and amphibious combat vehicles including the ZTS-63A and Type 62. Mechanized and motorized infantry units rely on Type 07P armored fighting vehicles, Type 92 armored personnel carriers, Type 85 and Type 89 tracked carriers, and Soviet-era BTR-series vehicles. Mine-protected troop mobility is provided by CS/VP3 and Casspir armored vehicles. Infantry anti-armor capabilities center on HJ-8 anti-tank guided missile systems and Type 69 rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

Artillery units field both towed guns and multiple launch rocket systems. Field artillery formations operate Type 59-1 130mm towed guns and D-30 122mm howitzers, supported by Type 07PA 120mm self-propelled mortar platforms. Rocket artillery capabilities comprise BM-21 Grad 122mm, RM-70 122mm, and A100 300mm heavy multiple launch rocket systems. Air defense artillery units maintain 2K12 Kub surface-to-air missile batteries, FB-6A mobile air defense platforms, ZSU-23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, Type 55 37mm towed guns, and man-portable air defense systems including the 9K32 Strela-2 and 9K38 Igla.

Operational responsibilities include national border security, defense of territorial integrity, and regional security deployments. Personnel have engaged in counter-insurgency and stabilization operations under the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique within Cabo Delgado province and the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in North Kivu, as well as United Nations peacekeeping operations, including the Force Intervention Brigade in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Historical combat experience includes the Uganda-Tanzania War. Equipment procurement centers primarily on acquisitions from China, alongside legacy Soviet and Russian materiel, with modernization programs prioritizing armor upgrades, self-propelled artillery, and mobile air defense capabilities.
