Description
The Kh-69 (NATO reporting name: AS-22 'Kazoo') is a Russian stealth subsonic air-launched cruise missile developed from the Kh-59. First unveiled in August 2022, the missile was reported to be in its testing phase in September 2023.
Designed with a reduced radar signature compared to its predecessors, the Kh-69 features a physical configuration similar to the Storm Shadow and Taurus KEPD 350, utilizing a pair of wings and four rear fins that deploy in flight after launch. It can be carried within the internal weapons bays of the Sukhoi Su-57, and is also compatible with the Su-30MK, Su-34, Su-35, MiG-29K, and MiG-35. Guidance is provided by a combined system utilizing GPS and GLONASS satellite navigation with an inertial backup, supplemented by an electro-optical seeker. The missile is capable of low-altitude flight to reduce radar observability and can be equipped with either a penetration or a cluster warhead.
The missile is operated by Russia. In 2024, the system was introduced to Indian Air Force representatives for potential integration with the Sukhoi-30MKI. The weapon has been deployed in combat operations in Ukraine. Ukrainian sources reported that three Kh-69 missiles were fired on 7-8 February 2024. On 11 April 2024, debris from a Kh-69 was identified at the site of an attack on the Trypilska thermal power plant. The strike completely disabled the facility, destroying its transformer, turbines, and generators.
