Baltiysk Naval Base (Pillau)

Baltiysk is a base of the Russian Navy's Baltic Fleet, located in Kaliningrad Oblast at the northern end of the Vistula Spit, on the Strait of Baltiysk, which links the Vistula Lagoon to Gdańsk Bay on the Baltic coast. It is the westernmost town in Russia and, together with Kaliningrad, one of only two year-round ice-free ports available to Russia on the Baltic.

The base is a principal fleet installation of the Baltic Fleet. It is a closed town, with access restricted to permit holders and barred to foreigners. During the Cold War, the co-located Baltiysk Air Base supported operations from the port. A ferry link connects Baltiysk with St. Petersburg.

The Soviet authorities established the naval base for the Baltic Fleet of the Soviet Navy at Baltiysk in 1952, on a site that had served as a German U-boat training facility during the Second World War. The port passed to the Soviet Union with the northern part of East Prussia after 1945, and the town, previously named Pillau, was renamed Baltiysk in 1946.
