Kaspiysk Naval Base (Dvigatelstroy)

Kaspiysk is a Russian Navy base on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, in the Republic of Dagestan, about 18 km southeast of Makhachkala. The base and its harbour lie adjacent to the Dagdizel plant on the seaward side of the city.

The installation supports units of the Caspian Flotilla, whose main basing was shifted to Kaspiysk from Astrakhan. Vessels associated with the base include Gepard-class frigates and Buyan-class corvettes. A naval storage facility in the city holds hovercraft and ekranoplans.

Shore support is tied to the local defence industry. The Dagdizel machine-building factory, in operation since 1932, produces diesel engines, electric motors and torpedoes for the Russian Navy. JSC Caspian Sea Precision Mechanics, founded in 1960, manufactures maritime navigation equipment for military and commercial users. A commercial seaport operates on the northern side of the city, and Makhachkala airport lies nearby.

The site's naval function dates from 1932, when a workers' settlement named Dvigatelstroy was established to serve the Dagdizel naval engine works. Arms production expanded during the Second World War, and the settlement was granted city status and its present name in 1947.
