Ochamchire Naval Base (Очамчира (пункт базирования))

Ochamchire Naval Base is a patrol ship facility and coal terminal operated by the Coast Guard of the FSB Border Service of Russia. It lies on the Black Sea coast at the mouth of the Jukhmur River, some 5 km northwest of the town of Ochamchire in the Ochamchire District and about 40 km from the Abkhazia–Georgia separation line. The base is in Georgian territory under Russian occupation and is administered from Abkhazia; the Federal Security Service is the principal occupant.

The base supports border protection duties along the Abkhaz coast, conducted jointly with Abkhaz forces. It berths Russian patrol boats, which have been stationed there since late 2009, together with the maintenance, supply and security elements needed to sustain them.

The harbour is artificial, with a narrow entrance protected by two breakwaters, and has berthing for around ten patrol boats. A cargo pier handles loading, refuelling and repair work, served by a rail branch into the port area and a crane. Following dredging of the approach channel from 3.8 m to 9 m, the port can take vessels of up to 10,000 tons; the limited depth excludes larger warships.

The port was built in 1933–1935 as a civilian facility and was transferred in 1940 to the NKVD Border Security fleet, serving in the Second World War as a patrol boat base with submarines concealed in artificial canals. The Russian brigade based there relocated to Kaspiysk in 1996, after which the harbour passed to Abkhaz forces and fell into disuse, silting up and suffering structural damage. Russia assumed control in 2009, dredged the channel and rebuilt the facility as the naval base in service today.
