Naval Base Guam (The Pacific Supermarket)

Naval Base Guam is a United States Navy installation on Apra Harbor, occupying the Orote Peninsula on the western coast of Guam. It supports United States Pacific Fleet and Seventh Fleet operations in the western Pacific and, since 2009, forms part of Joint Region Marianas, a Navy-controlled joint base combining the naval installation with Andersen Air Force Base.

The base is the home of Commander, Submarine Squadron 15, which controls the forward-deployed attack submarines based at Apra Harbor. These comprise Los Angeles-class boats and, since the arrival of USS Minnesota in November 2024, Virginia-class submarines, the first forward-deployment of the class. Submarine tenders of the Emory S. Land class, USS Frank Cable and USS Emory S. Land, are stationed at the base to tend Seventh Fleet submarines, the latter having transferred from Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia. Naval Special Warfare Unit One is based at Guam, as is Coast Guard Sector Guam, whose cutters include USCGC Sequoia and the Sentinel-class USCGC Myrtle Hazard, USCGC Oliver Henry, USCGC Frederick Hatch and USCGC Washington. The base supports some 28 further tenant commands drawn from Pacific Command, Pacific Fleet, Seventh Fleet and the Naval Construction Force.

Other resident commands include Military Sealift Command Ship Support Unit Guam, Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Five, Navy Munitions Command East Asia Division Unit Guam, Naval Airborne Weapons Maintenance Unit 1, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Guam and the 30th Naval Construction Regiment.

Port infrastructure centres on the wharves of Apra Harbor's inner harbour, including Wharves Love, Mike and Nan, formerly operated by the Ship Repair Facility, Guam. That facility, adjacent to the base along Apra Harbor, closed in 1997 following the recommendation of the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission; hull, mechanical and electrical support for the submarine force is now provided afloat by the resident tenders. Ordnance is held at the Ordnance Annex and by Navy Munitions Command at the Guam Munitions Site inland at Santa Rita, which includes the Maanot Reservoir works. Camp Covington, a sub-installation of the base, is one of three main-body deployment sites for Navy Seabee battalions in the rotation of the 30th Naval Construction Regiment, with barracks, galley, armoury, dental clinic and warehouses; the Seventh Fleet's Navy Expeditionary Forces Command Pacific is headquartered there.

The naval base was established on 7 August 1899. The present installation dates from 1944, when Lion Six and Seabees of the 5th Naval Construction Brigade built it at Sumay on Apra Harbor. Designated a Lion, or main fleet base, it was the first installation styled Naval Operating Base.
