Naval Base Guam (The Pacific Supermarket)

Naval Base Guam is a United States Navy installation on Apra Harbour, occupying the Orote Peninsula on the western coast of Guam. Since 2009 it has been administered as part of Joint Region Marianas, a Navy-controlled joint base combining the naval installation with Andersen Air Force Base.

The base is the headquarters of Commander, Submarine Squadron 15, and hosts Coast Guard Sector Guam and Naval Special Warfare Unit One, together with some 28 other tenant commands drawn from Pacific Command, Pacific Fleet, Seventh Fleet and the Naval Construction Force. It forward-deploys Los Angeles-class attack submarines, among them USS Annapolis, USS Asheville, USS Jefferson City and USS Springfield. On 26 November 2024 USS Minnesota arrived at Guam as the first forward-deployed Virginia-class boat. Submarine tending is provided by USS Frank Cable and USS Emory S. Land, the latter having transferred from Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, which service Seventh Fleet submarines. Coast Guard Sector Guam operates USCGC Sequoia and the Sentinel-class cutters USCGC Myrtle Hazard, USCGC Oliver Henry, USCGC Frederick Hatch and USCGC Washington.

Other resident commands include Military Sealift Command Ship Support Unit Guam, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Five, Navy Munitions Command East Asia Division Unit Guam, Naval Airborne Weapons Maintenance Unit 1, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Guam and the 30th Naval Construction Regiment. Ordnance is held at the separate Ordnance Annex, whose munitions site includes the Maanot Reservoir installation.

Wharves Love, Mike and Nan lie in the inner harbour of Apra Harbour, formerly serving the Ship Repair Facility, Guam, which stood alongside the base until its closure in 1997 following the recommendation of the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. Camp Covington, a sub-installation aboard the base, is one of three main-body deployment sites for the Navy Seabees and takes the rotation of the three battalions of the 30th Naval Construction Regiment; it holds separate officer, chief petty officer and enlisted barracks, a galley, armoury, dental clinic, headquarters buildings and warehouses. Navy Expeditionary Forces Command Pacific, under Seventh Fleet, is headquartered at the camp. Base support facilities include a library, chapel, visitors' quarters, theatre and bowling lanes, and Department of Defense Education Activity schooling at McCool Elementary and Middle Schools and Guam High School.

The naval base was founded on 7 August 1899. The present installation dates from the construction begun by the Navy's Lion Six and Seabees of the 5th Naval Construction Brigade after July 1944, built on the site of the destroyed Marine Corps barracks at Sumay. Coded a Lion, or main fleet base, it was the first installation designated a Naval Operating Base.
