Description

The F126 Niedersachsen-class frigate, originally designated as the Multi-Purpose Combat Ship 180 (MKS 180), was a planned class of surface warships for the German Navy intended to replace the F123 Brandenburg-class frigates. The project originated from studies initiated in 2009 under the working title MÜKE to replace the 143A Gepard-class fast attack craft. Over time, requirements evolved to address long-term overseas deployments, resulting in a larger design. The formal requirements were established in 2013, and the final design was selected in 2015. Following a European tender process, the contract was awarded to the Dutch Damen Group in June 2020, with construction distributed among German shipyards in Wolgast, Kiel, and Hamburg. The first ship, Niedersachsen, was laid down on 3 June 2024, with initial deliveries planned for 2032. The German Federal Ministry of Defence cancelled the program on 24 June 2026 due to cost increases and scheduling risks, opting instead to procure MEKO A-200 DEU frigates.

The F126 design utilized a modular concept based on interchangeable mission modules. These self-contained units housed the equipment, sensors, and weapons required for specific tasks, allowing them to be exchanged between hulls. Planned configurations included an anti-submarine warfare module with a towed array sonar, a detention module containing holding facilities and a medical quarantine area, a mine countermeasures module, and a diving chamber. The vessels were designed for extended deployments, with the capability to remain at sea for up to two years without returning to port for maintenance. To support this operational cycle, crews were intended to rotate every four months. This system was designed to optimize deployment efficiency during long-range operations, such as counter-piracy patrols, maritime embargo enforcement, merchant escort duties, and task force command. The design also incorporated chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear detection systems.

The class did not enter active service. Steel cutting for the first vessel commenced in December 2023, and the keel of the lead ship, Niedersachsen, was laid in June 2024. Following the cancellation of the program in June 2026, all planned hulls were cancelled, and no ships of the class were completed or deployed.
