Phalsbourg-Bourscheid (Quartier La Horie)

Phalsbourg-Bourscheid, also known as Quartier La Horie, is a military installation located in the Moselle department of France, spanning the communes of Bourscheid, Mittelbronn, Saint-Jean-Kourtzerode, and Zilling. The site initially contained a grass airfield utilized by the Luftwaffe during World War II. Between 1952 and 1955, the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) constructed a NATO-standard air base at the location. During the Cold War, the facility hosted various US units, including the 23rd Helicopter Squadron, the 66th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, the 513th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, and the 102nd Tactical Fighter Wing. Following the French withdrawal from NATO's integrated command, US forces departed in 1967. The base transferred to the French Army, was renamed Quartier La Horie in 1969, and transitioned to an army aviation role.

The installation retains original Cold War infrastructure designed for aircraft dispersal. It utilizes a "marguerite" (daisy) system consisting of hardstand shelters. These complexes feature groups of fifteen to eighteen shelters surrounding a central hangar, with individual shelters spaced fifty meters apart and designed to be covered with earth for added protection. The facility is equipped with a railway branch connected to the Réding-Diemeringen line, originally constructed to supply aviation fuel and replacement parts.

Currently operated by the French Army Light Aviation (ALAT), the base primarily hosts the 1er régiment d'hélicoptères de combat (1er RHC), established at the site in 1977. The regiment operates fleets of NH90 Caiman, EC665 Tiger, Aérospatiale Gazelle, and Aérospatiale Puma helicopters. Additional garrisoned units include the Phalsbourg commissariat support group (GSC), a defense infrastructure support unit (USID), the 42nd medical branch, a branch of the Service industriel de l'aéronautique (SIAé), and an aviation fuel depot (DEALAT).
