Description

Bardufoss Air Station is located in Målselv Municipality, Troms county, Northern Norway. Established in 1938, it is the country's oldest operational air station. During the 1940 Norwegian Campaign, the base hosted Royal Air Force Gloster Gladiators of No. 263 Squadron and Hawker Hurricanes of No. 46 Squadron. During World War II, the station supported German fighter, bomber, and reconnaissance aircraft focused on Murmansk convoys and naval operations. The 339 Squadron moved to the base in 1964, followed by the 337 Squadron in 1983. The Royal Norwegian Air Force Flight Training School relocated to the site from Trondheim Airport, Værnes in 2003.

The station is operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force and serves as the base for the 139 Air Wing. Stationed units include the 339 Squadron, which operates Bell 412SP helicopters for army support, and the Flight Training School, which utilizes Saab Safari aircraft. The 337 and 334 Squadrons are also based here; these units previously operated Lynx MK 86 and NH90 helicopters, though the NH90 contract was terminated in 2022. The facility is co-located with the civilian Bardufoss Airport.

Infrastructure includes an underground hangar, which was reactivated in 2024 to receive F-35 fighter jets. The base is used by international forces, including the UK Royal Naval Commandos, Royal Marines, and the Dutch Korps Mariniers, and serves as a site for cold weather operations for the Royal Air Force, British Army, and Royal Navy. Civilian entities on-site include the Norwegian Aviation College and commercial carriers operating Boeing 737 aircraft.
