Description
Joint Base Berry Field, formerly Berry Field Air National Guard Base, is located at Nashville International Airport in southeastern Nashville, Tennessee. The facility was established on June 12, 1937, and named for Colonel Harry S. Berry, the Tennessee administrator for the Works Progress Administration. During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces Air Transport Command requisitioned the field to serve as the headquarters for the 4th Ferrying Command. At the conclusion of the war, the airport was returned to municipal control, with specific facilities retained for the Tennessee National Guard.
The base currently hosts the 118th Wing and the 1/230th Air Cavalry Squadron of the Tennessee Army National Guard. It also serves as the headquarters for the Tennessee Air National Guard. Approximately 1,500 personnel are assigned to these units, consisting of full-time Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) and Air Reserve Technician (ART) personnel, supplemented by traditional part-time guardsmen.
Current missions at the base include the support of unmanned aircraft operations by the 118th Wing. The 1/230th Air Cavalry Squadron operates UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters from the site, following their relocation from Smyrna, Tennessee, in April 2015. Historically, the base hosted the 118th Airlift Wing, which operated C-130 aircraft and served as the C-130 International Training Center until its transition to unmanned aircraft support and the subsequent transfer of its fixed-wing inventory in 2012.
