Description

Sanya Air Base, also known as Yaxian Airfield, is a military installation located on Hainan Island, China. It operates within the jurisdiction of the Southern Theater Command. The facility is strictly military and is geographically and administratively distinct from both the civil Sanya Phoenix International Airport and the Yulin Naval Base at nearby Yalong Bay.

The base is operated by the People's Liberation Army Navy Air Force (PLANAF). Following the 2023 PLANAF reorganization, which directed the naval aviation branch to retain control of helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), carrier aviation, and special-mission aircraft, aviation activity at Sanya reflects this specific mission set. The installation hosts units equipped with Harbin Z-9 Haitun utility helicopters and Guizhou Soar Dragon UAVs.
